Course Info

Summary

Study to become a veterinary nurse assistant and learn and practice a range of clinical skills in both classroom and workplace settings.

Teaching and learning
To succeed in this programme, you will need to attend all scheduled on-campus classes, complete all your work placement hours, and complete your self-directed learning (most of which is online in Moodle). The programme is largely classroom based, with theory to support practical application. You will be involved in practical lessons as well as regular self-directed learning, including group work, where you will undertake a variety of tasks such as research projects and case studies.

Work placement
Students must attend and complete a minimum of 240 work placement hours during the programme. You will need to secure your own placement in a veterinary clinic to complete a minimum of 240 hours. More detailed information regarding placement requirements will be provided at interview. You will need to arrange your own travel to and from your work placements; we encourage students to carpool if possible.

Important Note:

Please note that even though the work is enjoyable, some students may find some situations emotionally distressing, such as animals that have been abused, are injured or sick, or require euthanasia.

Allergies
If you have any allergies to animals, it is important to declare this at the time of enrolment, so this can be discussed with you.

Career Outcomes

Graduates of this qualification may be employed as a Veterinary Nurse Assistant working with companion animals in an animal-related facility and be able to:

Maintain animal health and husbandry of animals in a veterinary clinic
Care for hospitalised patients.
Assist in surgery preparation and anaesthesia
Assist with routine diagnostic procedures.
